What is FAFSA?

FAFSA stands for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Here are two important links if you have not started your FAFSA.

https://studentaid.ed.gov/      https://fafsa.ed.gov/

What is the SAR?

After you submit the FAFSA, you’ll receive a SAR or Student Aid Report.  The SAR gives you basic information about your eligibility for federal student aid.  You are required to submit your complete and finalized SAR with your scholarship application.

It is important to file your FAFSA as early as possible so that you will be able to submit a finalized SAR with your scholarship application.  Sometimes additional information is requested or corrections are required.

What is the EFC?

After your FAFSA is processed, you will get an Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which is a number your college uses to figure out how much aid you can get.  Your EFC must be less than 8,000 to be eligible to apply for The William D. Squires Scholarship

Will the scholarship program be the same every year?

The exact program details will be announced each year when this website is updated in early January.  The William D. Squires Scholarship is primarily financial need-based.  The eligibility requirements and other details including the number of scholarships, may change each year. Other scholarship and school websites post our scholarship application.  It is highly recommended that applicants download the application from this website and submit the scholarship application for their class year.

Why does The Foundation only give scholarships to students from Ohio?

The Foundation is actually incorporated in Arizona because William was a resident of Arizona when the Foundation began.  It was William’s wish to give financial assistance only to students from his home state of Ohio.  William and all of the members of the Board of Directors were born in Ohio and graduated from Ohio High Schools.

After the overwhelming response by applicants, we do not anticipate expanding our geographic area.  There is obviously a great need for this type of scholarship, as shown by the number of applicants.

How many applications does the Foundation receive annually?

About 625-700 students apply annually for The William D. Squires Scholarship.  The ones that meet the eligibility requirements move on to the selection committee in May.  Please read all the directions to ensure that your application moves forward.

When will the recipients be announced?

The 2017 scholarship recipients will be announced in May.
